creatinghealthychildren

We are blessed to have the wonderful, Karen Ranzi, on the raw mom team.

Karen answers a common question on what to consider when weaning a baby to a raw or vegan diet. Many of you have emailed us about this, so we thought posting Karen’s reply would allow everyone to benefit. Karen will be giving more nutrition advice throughout the week on the blog and in the wisdom nuggets.

“My name is Karen Ranzi,

I am the author of the new book, Creating Healthy Children: Through Attachment Parenting and Raw Foods.

The type of food given to baby is dependent on the age of weaning. All babies require mother’s milk for at least the first year of life to create the strong immunity and bonding necessary for baby’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual development.

The fat and protein in mother’s milk is sufficient for baby’s growth well into the second year. I encourage you to nurse as long as possible. Humans are the latest to mature of all mammals therefore our young require the longest nursing periods. I recommend a minimum of two years. If a mother is unable to nurse for at least the first year of baby’s life, then alternatives could be a wet nurse, milk bank, or raw (unpasteurized) goat milk. Read the rest of this entry »

Interview with Doula, Cindy Hansen: Creating a Positive Birth Experience

July 21st, 2010 by Fiona

baby

Today’s call with Cindy Hansen is a great opportunity for new moms to get some great advice and insight into what options there are available to you. Cindy is a doula and qualified lactation counselor who will be covering as much information as she can in half an hour!! Here is an idea of what subjects to expect.

If you have any questions please email them to info@rawmom.com. Connect with you later on the call - or if you can’t make it - it will recorded and available to listen to online.

Listen to the teleseminar with Cindy Hansen

Educate your self… read a good book, listen to teleseminars :) women make better choices when they are informed.

How to choose  a qualified childbirth educator.

Hire a doula….

One of the best ways to ensure you have a positive birth experience is to hire a doula, especially if you don’t have access to a midwife.

With a doula you get one to one continuous support. Nurses change shifts become too busy to be with you in the room during lab our all the time. Doctors do not come until you are ready to push, and many times don’t even make it for that. Most doctors now belong to maternity groups where you see mainly one during prenatal visits and then who ever is on call when you got into labor is who will be attending your birth.

Make a birth plan

I can not stress enough how important doing a birth plan is. As a doula I spend a lot of time working and talking about birth plans with clients.

Birth plans also help you to clearly see what you want and don’t want and to give you strength to find your voice and say “this is the way I want the birth to happen” Being your own advocate is extremely empowering but you are also advocating for your unborn baby as well!

Breastfeeding support

This is huge!!! If you are going to breastfeed, and I hope all women at least try to do this, then you need to do as much research into this as anything else. There are tons of web sites committed to helping mom’s have a positive experience with breastfeeding. As a lactation counselor it is part of my prenatal education I do with my clients and then follow up with the postpartum as well. It is very important that moms nurse as soon as possible after babe is born.

Books To Read

Anything by Michel Odent!

Birth Reborn - Michael Odent - 2nd edition

Michel Odent’s experience as head of the maternity unit in Pithiviers, France, brings sanity to a world where birth has become one of chemical and technological interventions. Using a plain, common sense approach of helping women to trust and believe in their own ability to give birth, he achieves safer and more positive birthing experiences than the western world. Using very simple means, he and the staff work to humanize and feminize birth. There have been few milestones in the worldwide movement to reform and humanize the birth experience. Birth Reborn is one of them.

Raw Nutrition: Protein & Raw Food Pregnancy

July 20th, 2010 by Fiona

by Karen Ranzi

Protein is often a source of concern for those working with women following a vegan or raw vegan lifestyle. I have had midwives, doctors and other practitioners contact me to alleviate their concerns about the inadequacy of protein requirements during a raw vegan pregnancy.

There are proteins in everything that grows as long as it’s not refined. If some of our foods are deficient in certain amino acids, this will be compensated by their abundance in other foods. Protein is required for the development of the human baby, but the protein consumed should be of the highest quality. Green leafy vegetables and smaller amounts of a variety of nuts and seeds provide this high level of nutrients. For example, spinach contains 49% calories from protein, kale contains 45% calories from protein, and hemp seeds contain 22% calories from protein. Sprouts are also an excellent source of protein. A pregnant and lactating woman can get all the protein she needs eating whole, raw vegan foods.

Eating meat floods the body with protein waste products. The kidneys then need to eliminate these acidic wastes, requiring calcium as a buffer in the process. Calcium is continually lost in the urinary waste, and may result in osteoporosis or bone loss. Vegetable protein is much more easily absorbed into the bloodstream without the loss of calcium from eating animal protein. Animal-based protein places a great stress upon the liver and kidneys. We should eat the food to which we are naturally adapted: fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Finding the Bliss: The Birth of Kirra Calgary Hofer

July 19th, 2010 by Fiona

By Ruthbirthstoryruth-copy1

Giving birth is one of the most normal everyday kind of things, while at the same time so miraculous.  I still get spun out by the fact that a birthing woman’s body is the exact spot in the universe that splits open and allows a new soul to come into this existence. I feel so honored that I get to experience it at all.

For the birth of my second child, I put it out there that I wanted to experience a blissful, orgasmic, ecstatic birth. And even though I remained quite lucid throughout, and things never got as psychedelic as my first birth experience, I did get to experience birth the way nature intended.  A transformational rite of passage that equipped me with all I needed, both, physically, psychologically and spiritually, to capably mother this new baby.

My young family and I spent the pregnancy on the move.  We moved continents while squeezing in some traveling and visiting friends along the way. We were in Canada, on the coast of Vancouver island when my period never came. Hiking through lush rain forests with my toddler I could literally feel my cells spinning with life as this new ball of cells was doing just that, and growing exponentially. I felt such a strong awareness throughout the pregnancy, completely connected to my body and this baby, which was so important for us as we moved through the act of birth.

tompicking

We all basically know WHAT to eat, but we rarely hear about HOW to eat.  So, I’ve come up with a few fun Questions and Answers based on Ayurveda Nutrition to see how much we all know about HOW to properly eat.  Here it is!

We all love our nutritionally rich raw green smoothies, but which would better feed our bodies?  A raw green smoothie prepared by:

a. a loving child on Mother’s Day

b. a mother who woke up in a bad mood and was upset we had spilled the first smoothie she made

c. either a or b because it doesn’t make a difference - the smoothie will feed our bodies the same way.

Raw Recipes: Fresh Turmeric Juice

July 5th, 2010 by Fiona

by Ruth

A super yummy Aruyvedic drink to help your liver, support immune system and is great for keeping a singer’s throat soothed. I first tried this drink at Indus restaurant in Bali, and it blew my mind!!! As soon as we came home I recreated it in my kitchen…

turmeric-juice

Ingredients:

- 5 pieces of fresh turmeric root, washed
- 1 lemon
- warm water
- 2 tablespoon honey
- cold water

Preparation:

Put the turmeric root, and the the lemon through your juicer, you can put the pulp back a second and maybe even a third time to get all the goodness out.

Leave the juicer running and pour about 1/2 cup warm water through.

Mix in the honey. If you don’t want to use honey, either swap the lemon for an orange or use a different sweetener (it wont be as medicinal, but it will be sweeter…)

Top up with 1-2 cups cold water and store in fridge (keeps for a few days).

Serve over ice in short glasses. Turmeric also goes really well with freshly juiced pineapple and gives you a nice natural buzzy feeling..

The Wonderful Outdoors: Karen Ranzi - our new Raw Mom!

Children love to be active but today’s epidemic increase in obesity has resulted in children living a sedentary lifestyle. From the time their children are very young, parents need to be excellent physical role models by getting their children involved in activities which provide exercise and enjoyment. Hiking, bicycle riding, running, climbing, skating, swimming, skiing, tennis, team sports, dancing, martial arts and boating are only some of the physical activities which keep us in good shape. Yoga is also extremely beneficial for children. Many yoga studios now include classes specifically for children. Parents can take certain yoga moves from yoga videos, and practice them at home with the whole family.

I Scream, You Scream, We all Scream for Raw ICE CREAM!

June 28th, 2010 by Fiona

icecream

I know our whole family thinks I’m pretty alternative where food is concerned but I do think they understand my concerns and reasons.  But sometimes, it still is a little difficult without more support.  Just recently, after dinner, the extended family decided to go for ice cream.  The preschoolers were excited.  The crying and whining suddenly stopped when they heard ‘ice cream’ and they cheerily walked themselves to the ice cream parlor a block away.

In the ice cream parlor, our Uncle chided me from across the shop: “You may make delicious vegetables, but they [the ice cream parlor] make better ice cream!  Nothing is more American than ice cream!”  I didn’t know how to respond.  I was thinking: WOW.  This is exactly why people have health problems.  We dare not give a child a pack of cigarettes to smoke - but we think that treating a child to an over-sized ice cream on a cone filled with toxins (high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, artificial coloring, genetically modified ingredients, I could go on) is grand.  But what came sheepishly out of my mouth instead was: ”Well, I guess I have to make an even better RAW ice cream.”
