Raw Movement

shakaya-feb-2010Have you noticed there seems to be a movement sweeping through the raw community..? Many people are discussing it, many are doing it, and some are advocating it. I’m talking about the idea of widening our conception of what in fact is the healthiest diet. Let me ask you something, do YOU know what the optimal diet is? Most of us here would say a raw diet. Buuuuut, what exactly is a raw diet? How raw are you supposed to be to be considered raw? Is it all or nothing, or how important is the percentages of raw to cooked ratio for health? Does being raw mean being vegan? How healthy is the struggle of striving for a particular ideal, only to fail time and time again? How about when you desire certain goals, but the stress of striving for them outweigh the results? What about if there is judgement from other people or YOURSELF? Are there issues that lie underneath that aren’t being addressed through diet alone? Is focusing solely on diet as the means of obtaining health balanced? Or can it become toxic? What about the kids?? What does all the hyper-focus on the food mean to them? Is being raw a rawligion? What does it really mean to YOU?

There are truly amazing people in the raw movement who seem to be quite adept in their ability to trust their instincts and do due diligence with their research- using both hemispheres of the brain to ascertain what is right for them on their health journey- and we have learned much from them and been so inspired. However, it was always what worked for THEM that they did and eventually espoused. Of course, when anyone has the clarity and passionate beliefs and acts upon them with conviction, the innate strength and rightness of being which one is imbued with naturally shines a light outwards- not only guiding them onwards, but also attracting others.

Many people noticed this light in these particular individuals, and started to investigate this idea of becoming Raw for themselves. And for a decade now, many of us have been raw. The effects of changing our diet, our personal standards about not only food and nutrition, but also the ethos and ethics of our choices, and the consequences socially- for many of us have been profound. Some have found their purpose. Some have regained their health. Some have been released of the burden of excess weight or addictions. Some have reversed disease. The list goes on and on of the benefits of eating a raw diet!

shannon-leone_food_bountyI have always wondered…just because it worked for some, does that mean it will work for you and me? These people found what worked for them. THAT sounds like the real message to me. I don’t think anyone can say for sure what the perfect diet is for everyone, at every stage of their life.

For me, life is a process, and so is my awareness of what makes up real health; and it isn’t all about diet, though diet is a cornerstone. Many of you listened to speakers of the Raw Mom Summit and so you know that there ARE many models of the raw food diet. And every one of them attracts people that claim it is working for them even though it contradicts another version of raw foodism.

We have seen Dr. Graham passionately refute anything other than a 100% high-fruit, low fat diet, with lots of facts and stats to back it up. And we have seen David Wolfe suggest that certain people with particular metabolisms do well on a high fat all-raw diet. Dr. Brian Clement eats 70% raw and cooked grains. Many people say all grains, whether gluten-free or not, cooked or raw, are unhealthy. Victoria Boutenko consumes mostly green smoothies and soups but has recently added some steamed veggies occasionally. Shazzie was concerned about her daughter lacking in certain nutrients so added some eggs. Kate Magic raises her kids on a high superfoods diet. Sally Falon a widely respected author/researcher recommends raw dairy. Dr Weston Price who so many of us health-seekers have studied found that primitive people’s who lived the farthest from modern dentistry but ate a non-processed omnivourous diet (both plant and animal) had perfect jaws and teeth- and how many raw foodists can say that? Daniel Vitalis says raw veganism is a great cleanse, but not sustainable or even healthy for most people long-term. Aujanous Vonderplanitz cured himself from cancer by eating raw meat and now consults with thousands who do the same.

(Btw, I wouldn’t have thought this could possibly be good for anyone to do until I met a girl who was so robust looking, with perfect skin and clear eyes and beautiful teeth- an absolute natural beauty- who was the ‘healthiest’ looking person I have ever met. So I asked her about her diet. She said she ate all raw. My heart leapt for joy! Until she added ‘Meat. Raw meat’. I couldn’t even imagine it. But she vibrated such calm and yet powerful energy- kind of like a wild animal that is focused and peaceful yet totally alert and full of energy. I asked her how she came upon this way of eating and she told me about this man and his book called We Want To Live, and so I read it. Not for me, yet I could never discount it if it helps others.)

That was 8 years ago. The strange thing is that although I didn’t believe anyone could heal from this type of diet, I have to admit I have met very few raw vegans, if any, before or since who radiated the strength and beauty and physical health of this girl. My quest has always been for health, and I would love to look like she did, but being a raw vegan seems infinitely ‘superior’ to any other diet, and so it has been the path that I have chosen. Well, I no longer believe diets are superior or inferior…And neither am I 100% raw or vegan. The judgement that comes with those kind of concepts don’t seem ultimately very health giving, so I just hold that some diets are more nutritious.

Susun Weed who isn’t a raw foodist firmly believes that women and children need nourishment that plants alone cannot give. As a woman in my mid-forties, I want to ensure I do whatever my hormones may need for my later years, and so I hear that. Plus, any dogma which leaves no room for the emotional healing and is so confining is lacking in spiritual sustenance. My children are growing up and I constantly keep alert to ensure they are getting everything they need to meet their rapid growth spurts. I go in and out of being all raw, down to being about 90%, my kids a little less than that. And I used to beat myself up over it, now I just accept it and honour myself and my body and my mothering of theirs. Like I said, it’s a process, for all of us.

electrc-womanI most care about creating a safe haven for mothers on their journey. If I can do anything, it would be to support and encourage, offering some inspiration perhaps. But never to tell anyone what to do. I will always share what I do or what I would do in your situation if you ask me. And I would love to see other raw moms here with a variety of approaches so people can gravitate to what they resonate with. This will become a living community with a diverse and vibrant approach reflecting the evolution of sacred parenting at every stage. I’m not an authority. I’m no guru. Gosh, I’m so bored of gurus, aren’t you? I’m just like you- a mom- who loves my children dearly and wants to give them the best foundation I can in life.

Our diet is vitally important to our health, and natural raw foods are wonderful to include in a big way- but it isn’t the only aspect of health. My biggest hope is to get and keep our kids and ourselves off of junk food, to have people eating real nourishment, and even more importantly, is to address the underlying causes there, dietary, and emotionally. May we all be nourished. May we eat with mindfulness and gratitude, and be able to enjoy however we choose to nourish ourselves. And may we find love and support here on the journey.

GODDESSES IN EVERY WOMAN

4332556145_09faf62b34_mEven though I have been running rawmom for quite a while behind the scenes already, now that I am officially the owner, it feels like a thrilling but daring adventure, and I feel excited and nervous! I do not consider myself a business woman. I identify with one role, my calling, being a mom. However, I’ve have heard that people born under my sign in both the Western and Chinese horoscopes make good leaders and can lead successful enterprises, and as my children are growing up, it’s the perfect time for me to gradually transition back out into the world…I’d like to believe I can learn what I need to, and attract people to help me. If am to grow to the corners of my potential as a fully realised woman, as well as facilitate my mission to make a difference, I must have courage. I feel alot of changes coming…it started with changing my name from Shannon to Shakaya, and even endowing myself with a second name, one of the elements, Breeze. I didn’t consciously choose these names, they seemed to just find me.

The archetypal images of the Goddess come to mind. When I interviewed Susun Weed for WISH, I asked her which Goddess archetype she most identified with and she said for a long time it was Artemis, autonomous Goddess of the Hunt, Nature, Birth, a protector plants and animals and a Super Sexy Virgin who never bowed to the rule of any man. Powerful! I have always been fascinated by Goddess archetypes since reading ‘Goddesses in Every Woman’ when I was in my 20’s and later work by Caroline Myss. Here are some of the archetypes as described by Myss whom I have identified with- perhaps you will see yourself in some of these- and some others whom I feel the desire to connect more deeply with so as to draw from their well for my growth and expansion that I feel is needed now:

HERA: The Companion

This stereotype is loyal, tenacious and unselfish in their service to a more authoritive figure. In this relationship she provides the emotional and practical support to enable her partner to concentrate on his mission. This was long considered the traditional role of the wife. Hera is the Goddess of marriage and birth.

Sacred Animals: Her beautiful big eyes led her to be linked with cows, and lions.

Sacred Birds: Peacocks, cuckoo’s and ducks.

Sacred Plants: Apples of immortality, Gaia gave her a garden of these golden fruit as a wedding present. The pomegranates which is a symbolism of marriage. Iris, oranges and willow are also linked to the Queen of the Greek Gods.

Strengths: Leadership and a loyal wife. Despite her husbands affairs she stays with him and rules by his side.

Weaknesses: Vindictiveness, vanity and jealousy.

She often misused her position and powers to punish the Zeus’s lovers. Her retribution was also extended to the women’s children. When Antigone boasted that her hair was more beautiful than Hera, the Goddess became so enraged that she transformed the long locks of hair into snakes.

DEMETER: The Mother

The Earth Goddess and Mother Archetype is a life-giver and the source of nurturing, devotion, patience and unconditional love. The ability to forgive and provide for her children and put them before herself is the essence of a good mother.

Sacred Animals: Pigs. Snakes were symbols of this Goddess as her chariot was pulled by two winged serpents.

Sacred Birds: The screech owl.

Sacred Plants: In addition to the grains wheat and barley the penny royal, a type of mint and the poppy were sacred to this Goddess. The mint was part of a drink consumed at her temple in Eleusis where her priestesses wore poppies as her emblem. The chaste tree, frankincense, myrrh and sunflowers are also linked to this Goddess.

Strengths: Loving mother, persistence and empathic.

Weaknesses: Depression, lived her life through her daughter.

ATHENA: The Warrior

This Archetype represents physical strength, and the ability to protect and fight for your rights and those of others. Natural Teacher.

Sacred animals: Snakes form part of her famous statue.

Sacred birds: The owl is linked with Athena the Greek Goddess as it represents wisdom and watchfulness.

Sacred plants: Mulberry, oak and olive trees.

Strengths: Rational, intelligent, a powerful defender and arbitrator.

Weaknesses: Too ruled by her head and out of touch with her emotions and femine side. Unapproachable and lacking in compassion.

HESTIA: The Nun

The Nun is characterized by her intense devotion and dedication to her path. Their work requires great focus and includes not only spiritual paths but artistic and business pursuits. HESTIA is the domestic Goddess of the hearth domesticity, hospitality and family life.

Never shown in human form, she was usually symbolized by a sacred flame or a circle which represented the hearth fire.

Sacred Animals: Cows

Strengths: Modesty, welcoming, pacifying and dedication to her job.

Weaknesses: Self-sacrificing and unsociable.

APHRODITE: The Lover

Represents passion and selfless devotion to another person. It also extends to the things that make our hearts sing, like music art or nature. The Greek Goddess Aphrodite was the Goddess of love and beauty.

Sacred Animals: Dolphins.

Sacred Birds: Doves.

Sacred Plants: Wood anemones, apples, myrrh, quince, roses and lime trees.

Strengths: The ability to make men fall in love with her.

Weaknesses: She was Vain, bad tempered, jealous and unfaithful.

PERSEPHONE: The Maiden

The Maiden is one of your Archetypes if you are life still in touch with your childhood intuition and fantasies and have used these to fulfill your dreams. Hence you can still have this archetype at any time of life. PERSEPHONE is the Goddess of the underworld and goddess of spring and rebirth. The Maiden reminds you to take care of the magical child that lies within us all.

Sacred Animal: Bats

Sacred Plants: Grain, lily of the valley, spring flowers and pomegranates.

Strengths: Able to compromise, adaptable.

Weaknesses: Not able to escape the influence of an over protective mother. Torn by her loyalties she tries to please everybody.

There are other goddesses besides the Greek ones listed here, as well as Celtic, Egyptian, Nordic and Roman goddesses, plus fertility goddesses, moon and sun goddesses, and seasonal goddesses.

I think it was Anthony Robbins who said an unexamined life is not worth living and Byron Katie says that to engage in inquiry brings us emotional freedom.

Wild Parenting

I’m still working on unpacking, understanding, and integrating the information I received from Daniel Vitalis’ talk in October. One bit in particular really struck me: his concept of the origin of domestication and our responsibility to become feral beings. As an example of this, he spoke about the importance of incorporating more wild edibles into our diet. That resonated with me.
Jim and I have been doing a lot of research lately on foraging, especially for medicinal plants and edible mushrooms. The culmination of these activities is, ideally, the undoing of damage done by domestication.

Domestication is defined as “tameness; to overcome the wildness of.” Feral is defined as “is one that has escaped from domestication and returned, partly or wholly, to a wild state.” Most people understand these words in the context of animals, mainly pets, and Daniel expounded on this to include, among many others, our lawns, methods of Western food production, our system of government, and… each other. The idea of domestication was not new to me. I’d heard variances of it in my college philosophy courses – Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Foucault. However, the idea of feral was new. And how these two come together in terms of parenting is profound.

I don’t remember Daniel mentioning parenting, per se; but I remember listening to him and feeling something unlock in my head. It was audible, a resounding click, a turning, a creak of a door opening.

“Mom, I’m going to take a walk in the forest. I’m bringing Edgrrr with me.”

My immediate thought: AGH! No! Don’t bring the damn dog! He’ll get all muddy and I’ll have to wash him and it’ll be a big damn deal! And don’t climb on anything! I don’t want you covered in leaves and crap!

What I said was: “Cool. Don’t wear those dress-up boots though. Wear your sneaks, please.”

As Mo was changing her shoes, our dog – a 13-pound miniature poodle – excitedly paced back and forth around her legs. His was wearing that dog smile, as we call it, and was looking up at her expectantly. Mo opened the door, and he busted through, leaping onto the porch. Mo ran out after him. I stood there staring at the door for a while, thinking about my reaction.

When I am parenting Mo, I am ideally trying to guide her on her path while not giving into my power-over desires. We chose to homeschool because it afforded something we knew she could never get in a public school setting: virtually unlimited exploration time. But I struggle with this. I struggle with the learned inclination of wanting to make another Good Citizen™. For example,
she’ll burst into a fit of giggles while working on her grammar and I’ll find myself getting irritated because it will seem she’s lost her focus. Or she’ll clean her room and do things at speeds that work for her and I’ll find myself questioning her productivity. Or she’ll work on a sewing project and I’ll find myself getting frustrated because she’s not completing the task in a way that I
would deem efficient.

As an informed, enlightened parent, my responsibility should be, I believe, to refrain from my pull toward domestication. Almost more importantly, I have to work on undoing all the domestication I’ve been subjected to. So, I am having to find my inner wildness, to find those parts of me that want to burst out laughing, to do things ass backwards, to play in the mud
without a thought to stain remover. This is challenging, to say the very least.

In my family, we’re all doing this work together, communicating openly about the pitfalls, struggles, and accomplishments. We bash up against each other, each on our own course, our own path, living in our own authentic state. But we remind each other that we are operating from a place of love and always with each other’s best intentions at heart.

I’m not sure where we’re going to end up, but a feral family is on the horizon. Clad we may be in animal skins and eating mushrooms, but at least we’ll be that much closer to the Divine.

REV UP YOUR RAW MAMA MOJO

Hi my loves! I had the best time ever on a recent mini-detox and want to share with you the keys to my success so you can experience them for yourself and REV UP your own Mama Mojo, namely: have MORE energy, softer, smoother skin, a flatter tummy, deeper more restful sleep, and experience a nice break from even having to think about trying not to eat at nightime if that is an issue for you (which I have made the commitment to accomplish this year!)

So what is the best way to get started?

Here’s what I like to do to set the tone and get me super motivated:

STEP #1 Repeat THE UNIVERSE IS MADLY IN LOVE WITH ME

Doesn’t that feel amazing already?

STEP #2 DECIDE when and HOW LONG you will go.

I like between 3 and 11 days, although I did do a 33 day juice feast last year which was amazing. Next, decide WHAT kind of program you are most into doing.

For example: A juice feast of all fresh pressed veggie juices.

Or perhaps the Master Cleanser which only consists of pure water, fresh squeezed lemons, cayenne pepper and some sweetener like stevia, agave or honey (I personally don’t use any sweetener when I do this, buuuut that doesn’t mean you can skip this. I have been raw for 8 years and have fasted for many years before that and have experience with fasting, and also I have no blood sugar issues and can go for days without any sugar in any form and not feel weak or shaky or have headaches. PLEASE do not even attempt the MC unless you are really healthy and ready on all levels.)

Personally, my favourite thing to recommend to people starting out is a few days on Green Smoothies because they are so convenient- which means easy to stick to and succeed with- and so nourishing which is what most people really need. Stripping away toxins is a demanding job and most people are so deficient as it is, nutritionally and energetically. This is why I also do HERBAL INFUSIONS and decotions and other elixirs and will be doing a couple of programs here on rawmom with Daniel Vitalis and Susun Weed (who is also a guest speaker for WISH www.wishsummit.com) so you can learn how to make your own healing drinks.

STEP #3

When it is a day or so before the scheduled commencement date of your little detox diet, get rid of anything in your house that would seriously tempt you. Times might get a little tough and you don’t need the extra pressure. Set yourself up to succeed and don’t skip this important step.

STEP #4

I like this one. I put up on my fridge a piece of paper listing down the side all the days that I have planned for my detox, like this:

DAY 1~

DAY 2~

DAY 3~ etc…

…and that way I have a visual cue which serves not only as a reminder but also encouragement. Each day I tick off at bedtime as well as writing down throughout the day what and when I drank my smoothies or juices or whatever, including how much water I drank that day. You may also wish to chart your bowel movements, your sleep pattern, any symptoms that crop up, along with the healing modalities I am going to suggest you take advantage of using during your special customized program you are creating.

NETI POT

neti-potThis is a little ceramic (there are plastic ones too for travel) that looks like a little white tea pot without a lid. This a nasal irrigation device based on Auyervedic tradition that helps with sinus problems or allergies. I don’t have either problems- maybe that is because of my healthy diet, or maybe its because I use my neti pot. I only use it once in a while though, unless I’m doing a cleanse, then every other day. It’s super easy to use. You fill it up with warm water and a small amount of ground sea salt and ensure that the salt is dissolved. Then tip the spout into one nostril as you lean over the bathroom sink, and just allow the water to travel along the nasal passage and flow out the other nostril.

I like to place a little bit of sesame (unroasted) oil, or plain olive oil or even coconut butter on the tip of my ring finger and gently coat the inside of my nostrils AFTERWARDS which acts as a barrier is soothing. I recall Dr Dean mentioning the benefits of this in her wonderful Doctor of the Future 50 week health program where she gives all kinds of little great health information…so I have been doing it ever since when I neti pot, though I can’t exactly remember why! The feeling of clarity and sense of well-being is the result.

OIL PULLING

I heard about this from Tonya Zavasta while reading her e-book called TEETH; Tonya is one of our guests for the exciting world-wide event coming this Spring called WISH Women’s International Summit for Health. Go now and register- It’s FREE!

tonya-picOil pulling is another ancient Auyervedic system that is used to remove toxins from the body by way of the saliva. Swishing about a tablespoon or 2 into your mouth for about 15 minutes first thing in the morning on an empty stomach is all it takes. You do not gargle with the oil, just vigorously swish it around in your mouth while you open the mail or file your nails or whatever multi-tasking you like, and then spit out into the sink and rinse. It is apparently good for just about every condition known. The theory is that it exerts a powerful detoxification effect on the entire body through picking up germs and bacteria in our mouth and even beyond by pulling them through the mucous membranes in the mouth from the body. These toxins enter our saliva through a process of enzymatic action in the bloodstream and are drawn up and eventually out of our body with the oil that captures them. Never swallow the oil as it becomes toxic. And the key with this as with most health practices is consistency. Apparently, it is really effective. I am doing it several times a week and am enjoying it. Use cold pressed organic sesame oil (un-roasted) or Olive or coconut oil. This is an act of self love.

TONGUE SCRAPING

compromised-teeth-picYou are already doing this daily I hope. It’s as simple as taking a spoon and scraping your tongue to remove excess film that is loaded with bacteria and plaque building micro-organisms. I use an actual device called a tongue scraper that I got from the Health food store and that and brushing/flossing my teeth first thing in the morning is the KEY to me waking up my body-temple in the morning and feeling ready to face the day. Oral hygiene is so important. I have a heart condition which makes it even more so, but anyone will add years to their life if they take good care here. That is an actual fact. Affirm when you do it ‘I enjoy taking care of my self.’

CASTOR OIL PACK

I used to highly recommend this to people when I was a Colon Hydro Therapist, and its great for anyone who wishes to assist their own bowel cleanse whether they are doing colonics or enemas or not. Taking a break from eating solids and nourishing yourself with liquids for a few days weeks or even months (check with your doctor or health practitioner first) really helps most people get more in tune with their bodies. Using castor oil packs can really help soften impacted fecal matter that can build up in people who are not moving their bowels enough. Most people are constipated but don’t realise it. Ideally, we would move our bowels shortly after eating or ingesting food due to what is called peristalsis- and wave action of the bowel that moves everything along stimulated by the act of eating. Therefore, if you eat 3 times a day, ideally you would have waste eliminated 3 times a day too. Most people do not even move their bowels once a day! Imagine the build up inside. This can cause prolapsed colons which also produce protruding bellies. I do a massage for my colon when I am lying down and I can feel what is going on there.

A castor oil back is done when you have at least 20 minutes or more to rest. You take the castor oil and pour about ½ c onto a folded wool or cotton piece of fabric and place that on your tummy. Place a towel underneath you so in case of dripping. Then place plastic wrap on top of the pad, then a little hand towl on top of that. Finally a hot water bottle or heating pad on top of the towel. Just rest and relax and let the process do its thing. People find this deeply relaxing and effective and often have wonderful and satisfying bowel movements later that day or next day that are very comfortable and substantial. Mmmmm, relaxation is so pleasurable…

ENEMAS/COLONICS

This is a controversial modality for some. However, if done properly, I believe it is very safe and effective. I am not going to explain in detail because this is really something you need to read up on if you haven’t had either one already. What I will say is that by allowing water into the lower part of the colon through a rubber hose which enter the rectum, the water creates peristalsis and helps wash out the bowel of trapped gas, mucous, parasites like tapeworms, and old, impacted fecal matter. I know some people do these regularly, but I don’t recommend that at all. I do think it is a good idea whenever you are doing a cleanse, every other day or a few times per week. It really depends on you. There are so many myths about this such as its addictive, or it will cause your natural peristalsis to disappear or it strips out all your good intestinal flora, etc. I am not going to explain here why these are inaccurate because my intention isn’t to teach a class about intestinal irrigation so much as just letting you know what tools exist, which ones I personally believe are effective for most people, and allowing you to do due diligence and research anything you aren’t familiar with if it resonates with you.

I personally haven’t felt the need to do colonics for several years now and would only do an enema a couple times a week while on a cleanse. They aren’t as effective as colonics, but I am so in tune with my body that I can hold in enough water and actually feel it moving not only in the lower bowel but also along the transverse colon and down into the ascending colon right to my cecum where the large and small intestine meet. I enjoy being in tune with my organs.

BAREFOOT WALKS

snow-fun-webOOOOoooOOoO I LOVE THIS ONE! Our feet contain many meridians of energy that are stimulated and activated when we walk barefoot which help discharge Electromagnetic Pollution as well as invigorate all the organs which correspond to the reflex points on the soles of the feet. I started doing this several years into my raw life as I noticed I naturally felt so much stronger and heartier especially in the cold weather and even winter snow. I have recently learned that my natural urge to be barefoot is actually a true health practice which people like David Wolfe and Daniel Vitalis have been sharing a lot about recently. This is my 4th year and I have to say its such a pleasure to go barefoot out in Nature. Please do it with extreme mindfulness if you wish to try it. I don’t recommend doing it in urban areas. Learn to step with care and confidence. Love your feet, love your journey.

DEEP BREATHING

Like green smoothies, and veggie juices, deep breathing is not only detoxifying, but also so nourishing. Isn’t it amazing how shallow we normally breathe? Its good to be reminded to take deep breathes throughout the day. I do this at night time with my children. It sets off a yawning symphony and really does help us relaxxxxxx.

MASSAGE AND GET MASSAGE

There are deep healing benefits to touching and stroking our children and partners, and having them reciprocate. The power of touch is well known but under utilized. I love to cuddle with each of my boys for a few minutes at bedtime and we also like to give full body hugs throughout the day. If you don’t have time or energy left for sex with your mate or are not in a relationship, touching people be it our friends or family, is extremely healthy and healing. Stroking the hair, playing footisies under the table, light head massages….find ways to touch and be touched more, for health and pleasure!

45 and SO Alive!

It feels like forever since I posted something, its been so busy around here and I know you know what I mean- life with kids always is. Just off the heels of the holidays was my son’s birthday and this weekend was my 45th and Ooooooh I feel better now than at 25! Now mind you, with all the celebrating and socializing I have definitely been kicking up my heels and over-indulging in festive cooked foods- mainly rice and pasta and sweets like the delicious raw cheesecake I made for Landon’s birthday seen in the picture. I was also in several more magazines lately and seemed to make all sweet creations for them too… Fortunately, I have learned over the years to go with the flow and not bother worrying about it. So, instead what I do is a mini re-set of a week long juice fast. Today is day 5 and I feel fantastic!! It’s so easy once you commit to just doing it!

I started the first 2 days with the Master Cleanser (although I don’t use any sweetener- just tons of cayenne pepper and fresh squeezed lemon water) and then I juiced greens for 3 days: kale, celery, cucumber, parsley and a green apple. Today I made an almond mylk out of nettles infusion and tonight I will make a tea from milk thistle seeds to support my liver. Everyday for ‘lunch’ I also make a bentonite clay/caprylic acid/pysllium drink which is great for the colon. And every night a castor oil pack.

A magical side-effect of doing something like this is how strong I feel. I remember trying to do these detoxes when I was younger and it always felt like torture because I would feel weak and tired and so hungry. Now, although the first 2-3 days I do feel hungry, my energy is just perfect- high, happy and balanced. In fact, instead of feeling delicate and sensitive to the cold, I am actually doing Polar Bear Dips and long barefoot hikes in the snow. I used to suffer in the cold winters before I went raw. Now, although I still prefer balmy sunny summers, I actually enjoy all the seasons now and love to be out in the cold.

After re-reading the Daylight Diet and realising how important it is to eat early in the day, and knowing this is one of my biggest personal challenges, doing this little detox program is hopefully helping me to create a whole new habit for when I do return to eating.

What I love too is how my family gets to see me taking care of myself. My husband actually joined the juicy fun on day 2 and although I don’t feel it is necessary or appropriate to fast healthy children, I do notice that it feels really easy to prepare all-raw for them instead of the warm grains or seaweed soups or steamed veggies. They just feel so happy they don’t have to fast that they are grateful to be eating and it makes them more aware of their bodies and they tend to do more stretching and brush their teeth longer and little things like that whenever I take on my mini-cleanses.

I am even thinking of doing a one day a week juice day- I used to do this in my 20’s with a boyfriend who was a vegetarian too, and a black belt in Karate and we would juice fast on weekends together. It was always so much fun and something we looked forward to. It really helps having a partner to stay motivated. Here’s to everyone out there taking wonderful care of yourselves! And it’s a good thing for our kids too! Next post I will share some of my best tips for doing a successful cleanse if anyone is interested in using simple things like neti pot, oil pulling, tongue scraping and others, so watch for these coming soon.

The Birthing Process

In the Pagan tradition, Yule is the birthing time. The Goddess is great with child and is in labor to bring forth the Sun. The Winter Solstice also being the longest night of the year symbolizes that deep doubt and darkness that we can sometimes feel as we are going through our own birthing processes. And so, instead of mourning the fear and moaning over the pain, the Goddess encourages us to have hope and to celebrate this new birth, to create a welcoming home for this new child.

Yeah. Right.

You know, when I put my family’s traditions in the context of this lovely story, it’s easy to feel like the world will just fall into place. Hey, I remember when I gave birth. I wasn’t thinking about celebrating and latch-hooking the welcome mat; I wanted this kid out! And I think that’s how most of us approach change. We don’t want to go through all the labor, all the pains, the gradual transitioning, the learning process. We don’t want to enjoy the sites along the way; we want to just Be There.

The other day, Mo was relating a story to me about her views on spirituality. She ended it by saying, “I don’t want a religion; I want a relationship.” This was profound for me. She’s been frustrated lately by the idea of boxing her religion – and I would wager her beliefs in general – into the one category of Paganism. We have both been beginning to feel that our views, our ethics, our principles for life are more encompassing. I think that Paganism being an Earth-centric philosophy and religion (some would argue that Paganism isn’t a religion… but that’s another article) still works for me on a lot of levels. The stories are beautifully symbolic and keep me grounded in the Wheel of the Year and the happenings of my internal and external environments. But Mo’s point is well-taken: to be in relationship implies that the person has an intimate ongoing communication with whatever it is that person is calling Divine (or God or Goddess or whatever works best for you).

The idea of being in relationship with something means that you not only have to value the thing or person that you are in relationship with, but you also must value the process of that eternally-changing relationship. And let’s admit it: this sucks. OK. Maybe not with all things. But I am thinking specifically of my relationships with food and money. And, of course, let’s not forget about those relationships with people you can’t change, like my sometimes angst-filled daughter and my oftentimes pig-headed husband! I’m kidding about the relationship with them sucking, but you get my point: being in relationship means that you have to consider the other party’s opinions, input, influence. And this can be incredibly difficult – especially in relationships with inanimate objects like food or money.

So, where do we start with acknowledging relationship? How can we find peace with this sometimes painful process? Is it possible to recognize the path as a awe-inspiring, even a joy-riddled one?

The hard truth is that this whole process starts with you admitting that you have to stand where you are at all times. You have to start with saying, “OK. I am right here, right now. Now what is the best decision I can make? What does this relationship feel like right now? Where do I want it to go? How can I work with in order to get where I want?” And most importantly… you have to be willing to let go of outcome. This is the sucky part.

The part of the story that I like most about the Goddess giving birth to the Sun is this idea of faith: will the Sun return? Because the bottom line is that none of us really know for sure. The irony here is that most of us have more faith in the returning of the sun each day than we do in our relationships with people or finances. Can we put ourselves in a situation of unconditional trust in the Universe? Will we be taken care of? Will others reciprocate our love? Will we heal ourselves from our past? Will we make good choices around parenting our children? And will we be forgiven when we don’t?

We are in relationship with everything around us. How can we nurture those relationships defines the benefits we get. I don’t believe this is selfish. I believe this is a necessary part of thriving as a human being.

ROOT BEER ELIXIR FOR EPIC HEALTH

Don’t be put off by the possibly esoteric list of herbs, or the number of steps, or the length of prep time… Enjoy the process of creating and brewing your family into epic health and relish in the joy that comes from seeing them enjoy a special beverage that totally and 100% supports their health and totally 100% pleases their taste buds. And for anyone who in their pre-raw days consumed a lot of root beer… now you can once more, this time guilt free!

My husband loves the flavour of root beer. In Australia, the closest substitute is Sarsaparilla soda. Both of these, however, aren’t exactly something I’d be happy with my children drinking and definitely not something I’d choose for myself.
I’m pretty sure all the raw mom readers are aware of how damaging consuming pop (or soft drink as us Aussies call it) is for our families’ health. I’m also pretty sure there are at least a few moms out there whose kids still would LOVE it if they served them root beer as a treat. Well… now you can… and as your loved ones enjoy the yummy root beer goodness, you can enjoy the fact that you are supporting their vibrant health rather than compromising it.

HOW TO CREATE A ROOT BEER ELIXIR STEP-BY-STEP

  1. Fill a saucepan (ideally heat proof glass) with around 2 litres of cold spring water.
  2. Gather and place into your pot of water:
    • 3 TB sarsaparilla root
    • 2 TB burdock root
    • 2 TB dandelion root (make sure it’s raw, not the roasted coffee substitute)
    • 2 TB licorice root -
      (I used all dried, but if fresh is available to you, use fresh instead, just double the amounts.)
    • 2 TB freshly grated ginger
    • 1 vanilla bean, snipped into 4 pieces
  3. Slowly simmer the herbs in the water until it gently boils, reduce the heat and let mixture infuse for a couple of hours at least (overnight even).
  4. Strain mixture and add sweeteners. I personally use a couple of spoonfuls each of molasses and evaporated cane juice and then reheat the brew to boiling and let reduce to a syrupy consistency. Remember that the licorice itself adds a sweet flavour, so use less concentrated sweetener then you normally would. I like molasses for the colour and iron content even though it isn’t raw. I haven’t tried it yet, but I bet simmering dates in the brew would work fine. Or just add straight up honey. You could even add in some cinnamon and stevia for sweetness without calories. I’m a little more lax on the sweeteners for this, as it isn’t an everyday drink.
  5. Let cool and decant into a glass bottle.
  6. Add 5 - 10 drops WINTERGREEN essential oil and shake vigorously.
  7. Store in fridge for up to a week. Use about 1/3 root beer mix to water (using sparkling mineral water gives you the same bubbly feeling as the regular pop version does and seriously kids of all ages love it… just don’t tell them it’s healthy!)

The most important ingredients to replicate that root beer taste are the sarsaparilla and the wintergreen. Feel free to experiment with the others. All the dried root herbs are liver tonics. Pretty much everyone’s liver in western society could use a little help and cleanse. Go easy on this stuff if you are pregnant. The licorice helps carry the other herbs to where they are needed in the body (i.e. the liver) but also has the tendency to increase blood pressure (another reason to exercise caution drinking this during pregnancy). All the ingredients are safe for children. The wintergreen really is the key ingredient. If you are at all cautious about ingesting essential oils check out the chapter on using essential oils in food preparation in the book Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine by Gabriel Cousens. I love using essential oils in my food, especially cardamom essential oil (but that is a whole other post in itself). You can buy wintergreen oil from the Hulda Clark store where she uses it in her healing protocols.

Seriously, Wintergreen oil is amazing stuff. When I was playing around with the root beer elixir (before the addition of the wintergreen) something wasn’t quite right, so I googled traditional ways of making root beer and came across information on wintergreen leaves being the main ingredient of the root beer of yesteryear. We just happened to have some of the oil lying around, so I added it in and WOW, my cordial now tasted like the real deal. My husband gulped his glass down and begged for another.

From my research, wintergreen is a super potent healing agent for joint injuries, muscle pain, bursitis, and arthritic conditions. As it is so potent though, I would not recommend consuming extreme amounts of wintergreen. My husband is currently rehabilitating a pretty major hip injury sustained from some hectic mountain biking. If you are the mom of active and thrill seeking teen boys, that’s another reason to give this recipe a try.

Holidays are over, THE DAYLIGHT DIET is On- My Way!

shannon-dave-wolfeWow! The first week in January of 2010. Into the New Year we go! Happy Happy Joy Joy! Holiday time can be very busy and sleep and dietary concerns are not my top priorities between all the raw parties and events, polar bear dips and barefoot hikes in the snow, night skating, tobogganing, visiting old friends and other festivities which included TV appearances, I really let things slip a bit. I am rather strict and disciplined 90% of the time, my diet is 90% raw, and come to think of it, my marks in school were that too… I leave a good 10 % for total spontaneity and adventure. Now it’s time to get back on track! I looooove the fresh start feeling of a clean slate before me to create upon, and I do make resolutions in the form of setting intentions. Speaking of which, I am still loving the Daylight Diet which I started in November that I promised to let everyone know how I am progressing. I have such a long way to go, yet I am encouraged by my progress already. I am making baby-steps and if I didn’t love and honour myself so much, I would think I was pathetic actually because of how slow I am going! Hahaha.

There are 3 stages to the Daylight Diet, and although I have accomplished several things since I started it, I must admit I am only at stage 0.5. That’s right, I’m not even at stage 1 yet! Stage one is where you eat only when it is daylight- simply stop eating after sundown. I have not been able to do that exactly, however, I have stopped eating after dinner, which is usually around 6 or 7pm now. This is not ideal, and not what the book recommends at all, yet for me who usually would eat my dinner around 9 or 10 pm, plus have a big snack 2 or 3 hours later, this is a BIG improvement for me and definitely a step in the right direction.

Just doing this has not been easy because I usually do not eat at all in the day but Paul says unless you eat enough nourishment in the day, you will be hungry at night and it will be very difficult not to eat late. Since going raw 8 years ago, I have pretty much been drinking only water until noon, having either a green juice or green smoothie around 1 or 2pm, and then just nibbling with the kids when I serve their dinner at 6pm, and not really eating mine until the house is all quiet around 9 pm.

shannon-boys-xmastreeThe Daylight Diet explains clearly why anyone who wishes to improve their health would do better to eat the biggest meal earlier in the day and completely cease eating after sundown. So I am getting closer to this goal. I have started the habit of making my green juice or smoothie earlier, around 10am, and although I am not totally consistent with this yet, I am getting there. I am also eating something in the afternoon to get some nourishment in so I won’t be hungry after my next and final meal at dinner. I find eating in the day really different for me being used to not stopping for lunch, and just being very productive. I now realise there is just no point keeping a beautiful home and making healthy meals for my family and working on my rawmom books and projects for my world-family if I am not taking time to properly nourish myself.

So, I am sitting down in the middle of the day, and making a small and beautiful meal of simple fare like raw soup with homemade flax crackers I make with my green juice pulp and spices, or avocado and cucumber with dulse or zucchini pasta with tomatoes and olives- just reeeeally simple and quick meals which I can enjoy in silence- just like I used to love to do at night- I find I digest food so much better when I eat very slowly and peacefully, almost meditatively. To enhance the experience and ground me in this new ritual, I like to light a candle and either eat outside, or at least sit by the window and eat watching the birds and chipmunks play in the beautiful snow. Oh, and I have also started using chopsticks at every meal which I adore! That slows me down too, and I find food actually tastes better off of wood instead of cutlery. I find myself blessing each bite and feeling the love that is all around which surrounds me, and I may only spend about 15 or 20 minutes, yet, I feel soothed and satisfied on all levels after this little meal.

I have to admit, most nights after dinner, I still find myself wanting to eat and so I have been doing a couple of things which have been helpful. One thing is to make a cup of hot lemon water or ginger tea, or herbal infusion or even an elixir based on Daniel Vitalis’ work. I make one with milk thistle seeds which is great for the liver, and it tastes so delicious!! I’ll share all about this in an upcoming post so you see how easy and amazing doing this is. I have occasionally been enjoying either a ruby red grapefruit, or a pomegranate late at night, which isn’t ideal, but it’s a treat. I love both because they keep my hands busy and I love working for my food- that satiates me more somehow when it isn’t so instant. So, although this is cheating a bit, it is so much better than what I would normally do making chocolate pudding or raw brownies or walnuts with braggs and garlic and cayenne pepper, or anyone of a number of raw goodies I would normally make late at night.

I am also working on breaking the habit of late night stimulation from computer work or tv. My habit is usually to work until at least midnight or 1, and then relax in front of the tv folding laundry watching a movie while planning the next day’s menus and errands and work . I am pretty sure doing that makes me want to eat more too, so I am turning the computer off by 9 or 10 most nights and heading upstairs to read. I still stay up pretty late, but I am turning in around midnight or 1am, not the usual 3 or 4am… so for me this is great progress, and just the beginning!

arcticshannonIt’s a lot of habits I still wish to change… and it isn’t that I didn’t realise this before, its just that I was fooling myself into thinking if I was raw that I could get away with all this late eating and lack of sleep. I feel that as challenging as this is for me to make these changes, that the results will be worth it. I am already noticing that I am waking up more refreshed. And there is a slight euphoria that I cannot totally understand or describe… a physical sense in my body that something HUGE and exciting is happening. I just feeeeeel like my body is happier. And will continue to become happier still as I continue to progress through the stages of the Daylight Diet. Before I can move on to stage one or two or three, I need to really accomplish maintaining my food intake during the day and taper my last meal back from 6 pm to 5 pm before it gets dark.

Having goals and setting intentions and knowing why I am passionately striving to create myself anew every year is an adventure. I figure I can either pay with a bit of discipline now, or regret later! How about YOU, my lovelies? What one habit, if you changed, would change your whole life for the better? Mourning Has Broken

I heard somewhere that it takes 14 days to create a new habit. I think that’s crap. I think it takes a lot longer than that. Not only are you having to make the new habit a reality, but you have to mourn the old habit, honour that old habit. Those lovely old habits have helped you hobble through some tough times. They’re like the favourite mixing bowl that finally breaks after 20 years: you know it can be replaced, but there’s still sentimentality attached to it. My new habits can sometimes take months and months to stick because I want to usher the old ones out with gratitude and with grace… no matter how odd or unhealthy that old habit may be.

I recently went on vacation to visit my husband’s family. Jim’s family is incredibly large (by my standards, anyway), so we ended up attending a number of holiday parties. Each party had a similar set-up: buffet-style snicky-snacks, followed by another buffet-style dinner, followed by another buffet-style dessert selection. Of course, beer, wine, and assorted other alcoholic drinks were also available throughout. The set-up was always nice, the hostesses amazingly gracious, and the company was excellent.

It’s just that… I’m still in mourning. Or so I wanted to believe.

I found myself getting ready for each party and doing a quick body scan: am I hungry? Where is my head today in regards to my eating? Do I need to take any food or drink with me to make me feel more comfortable? This scan has been part of what I’ve been calling my Transitional Plan for almost two years now. When I first began transitioning to a much more intentional diet – one that included a higher percentage of raw foods, one that was more vegan and more local – I knew that I was the one that was going to have to provide for myself in every situation. I couldn’t just assume anymore that I would be able to find something to eat or drink. But this isn’t just about me being practical about my dietary needs; this is also an emotional journey. I knew that if I put myself in a social situation that the environment itself would be a trigger for me. When people are celebrating, there is an unspoken understanding that eating party-type foods is expected and encouraged. I find this ironic because we’re celebrating milestones in our lives and yet we’re eating and drinking things that discourage optimal health. This pattern then becomes infused in our day-to-day reality: we begin to look for reasons to celebrate, to eat these types of foods, in order to incorporate them more readily into our daily diets. So, the lowly celery stalk gets pushed to the side as an “appetizer.”

So, I found myself coming home each night to enter my food into my food blog and saw that the choices I made weren’t that hard after all. I didn’t eat any meat, any dairy, any eggs, any refined sugar, any wheat, drink any alcohol, and stayed almost 100% raw. I’d had a good time at the party and didn’t feel emotionally drained afterwards.

But the most important realization was that all of this wasn’t an effort anymore. I’d made all of these choices without angst, without feeling lack, or without feeling peer pressure. What did this mean? Had I truly crossed over into some new territory of myself?

I think – and don’t quote me here – but I think… that I’ve created a new habit. After 2 years of working through all the emotional baggage around parties and food, I believe I may finally be out of mourning. This by no means is the end of my journey with food and emotional eating; it’s just one piece. But it is cause for celebration.

Now… where’s that celery stalk?

Carob Magic

Are you looking for a completely 100% natural, totally unprocessed alternative to teething medication for your baby? Have you ever had epicurean pleasure of tasting carob in its truly raw, unprocessed state? Did you know that you can give raw carob pods, straight off the tree to a teething baby as a rusk to soothe their gums on? How awesome is that? Carob pods are totally unrefined, compared to even the homeopathic stuff you can buy at most health food stores.

greenpodsI am such a huge fan of carob. I’m an even bigger fan of carob now that I am mother. I have lots of fond memories tied up in carob. My mum used to buy the cooked sugar free carob buds from the health food store when I was a kid. I used to think it was such a treat! Then I went to school and discovered junk food and the carob kinda lost its sheen for me. But I always came back to carob, and during my uni days when I was a strict vegan I even found a version made with soy instead of milk powder.

Fast forward a few years and there I was with a baby girl whose teeth had begun to grow. Someone, somewhere (I can’t recall who it was or where now) mentioned in passing how the local aboriginal women in my part of Australia would use the whole dried pod of the carob tree for their babies to suck on as teething rusks. I liked the sound of something so natural and abundant (carob trees grow well here… its not uncommon to find them in suburban backyards) so I tracked some down and also did some research.

brownpodsCarob is native to the eastern Mediterranean, probably the Middle East, where it has been in cultivation for at least 4000 years. Carob also thrives in the wild. The plant was well known to the ancient Greeks, who planted seeds of this plant in Greece and Italy. Carob pods are high in calcium and vitamin A. It also contains B vitamins, magnesium, potassium, and the trace minerals iron, manganese, chromium, copper, and nickel.

This plant is also called St. John’s bread or locust bean because the pods were once thought to have been the “locusts” that were eaten by John the Baptist in the Wilderness.

Carob has a sweet flavour, is rich in calcium and has a really mild analgesic effect. Small children are naturally drawn to its soothing nature. Sounds like a good teething alternative to me. My girl liked it, and I have to admit, I liked the taste too. They seriously taste like candy and its feels pleasant to chew the slightly hard pods in the mouth to release all the wonderful flavours. My baby never had a very hard time with the whole teething thing, but she did enjoy sucking on those carob pods. I felt happy knowing she had something health supporting in her mouth. The only problem I came across was making sure all the hard little seeds inside the pods were removed as the pod opened up. And I have heard that carob will help both constipation and sooth diarrhea. One website I came across states:

“Carob’s tannin content also inhibits bacteria, and can stop certain toxins and free-radicals in their tracks, inactivate them, and get the body to discard them. A research study, using carob powder with babies for bacterial or viral diarrhea, showed recovery within 2 days. Babies treated with conventional medicine took almost twice as long to recover. The babies given carob also regained normal temperature and body weight quicker. The high fibre content of carob, together with the pectin, makes the stomach contents more glutinous, thus deterring the back-flow of acid in the throat.”

Raw chocolate making puts a whole new dimension into the magic of carob. David Wolfe and Shazzie in their book, nakedchocolate.com discuss carob’s rich calcium content, mixing alchemically with chocolate (cacao) to lessen the stimulating effects on little kids and also work synergistically with the magnesium in the cacao. From my own experiments using carob in your raw chocolates also lessens the amount of concentrated sweeteners needed. Carob pods are also high in protein, and in their extracted form are used in numerous protein powder supplements. Less caffeine like stimulation, less concentrated sweeteners, and high protein? Sounds like perfect food for nourishing little ones.

Depending on where you live in the world tracking down dried carob pods might be a tad hard. Most online raw food suppliers sell really raw carob powder (usually from the Mediterranean, where carob was first cultivated) so it is possible that they could stock the pods too. I can buy dried pods from the bulk section of most health food stores in northern New South Wales, Australia and my local farmers market here in Queensland even sells carob nibs (just like cacao nibs, only more mellow in flavour). My adventures with carob have taught me that tools to help you in your journey as a mother are usually right there beside you, in a totally natural state. A perfect gift from mother nature. I feel grateful to my mother, for feeding me carob when I was young. Nurturing me with that sweet taste even though it was in a cooked form (the chocolate replacement I used to eat was made with skim milk powder and hydrogenated oil). Carob is such a perfect food for such precious beings as our children and combined with the knowledge I now have about raw food nutrition, I am excited about nourishing my children with this magical seed pod.
