Do you feel EXTREME?: Utopian Ideals in a Modern World

Since joining the raw food community I’ve dealt with feelings of ‘extremism’ and not quite fitting in. It starts with food and nutrition, then radiates into morality, philosophy and lifestyle.

Once on the other side of the fence, I labeled raw foodists ‘extreme’ in their living, driven by a cacao fueled aspiration to be 100% raw. My 80% felt inferior - never mind the lows of winter months. I’d learned so much about food, and managed to heal my body - but where did I fit in to this raw community? (more…)

Monkey Mike - raw food recipes for kids

Since the release of our e-book Monkey Mike’s Raw Food Kitchen: An Un-Cookbook for Kids in September last year, we’ve sold heaps of copies of Mike to parents who wanted their kids to get excited about trying raw food.

Recently, we received a beautiful letter from a very happy mom named Kerstin Pichon, who purchased the book for her son (pictured in the photo above). (more…)

I was out shopping the other day, and found a gift card I got for Christmas in my purse. I was near the shop and experienced that rush of excitement, which, is no stranger to us women! Adding to the child-like wonder of this mystical retail-therapy voucher - I didn’t know how much it was for.

As soon as I entered the shop, I saw an earring and necklace set that sparkled and made me smile. As I held them up and looked in the mirror, I thought how special they would be if they were real diamonds… but I was happy I could treat myself to something pretty - so made my way to the cashier to find out if the mystical gift card would cover them.

As I skipped out of the shop, swinging my bag, I remembered shopping in that same shop with my mom as a child. How good it felt to be shopping with my mom and be bought a gift. Gifts made me feel loved, appreciated, and special.

Raw Coconut Gazpacho - Refreshingly Delicious

We always hear about Tomato Gazpacho.  What about Ajo Blanco?   The Andalusian Ajo Blanco is a white gazpacho that is traditionally prepared with bread, almonds, garlic, water, olive oil, salt and vinegar. In my raw Coconut Gazpacho recipe, I substitute the bread with ground flax seeds and the water with raw coconut milk.

Aside from being the highest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids, flax seeds are an excellent laxative and anti-carcinogen.  They remove toxins from the blood and intestines.  Coconut is a cooling diuretic.  It soothes and protects internal membranes and the skin.  It is also anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.  The benefits are numerous.  This soup is more filling than its Tomato counterpart, but just as refreshing.  This was a success at our house!  We all enjoyed it very much.  We hope you do too! Unpacking “Raw Mom” - Lisa Marie Lindenschmidt

Thursday, May 20th, 2010 by Fiona

By Lisa Marie Lindenschmidt

Because of my recent changes in diet, I’ve been questioning my right to be a contributor to rawmom.com. My focus is no longer on raw, nor is it on vegan. Some days I feel like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole.

I know I’m a mom. I know that part of the equation is still valid. I still wake up every day intimately connected to this other person sleeping up in her loft. I worry and fuss over her, buy her stupid little quirky gifts, and get frustrated when she gives out attitude. I also wouldn’t trade it for anything - although some days she tests that resolve. But I know that I chose this, we chose each other, and I need the lessons she teaches me sometimes more than she does mine. I know that I am a mom. (more…)

Fiona & pixie

I recently joined the Raw Mom team, and I wanted to say “hello!” I am so excited to be part of this amazing community.

I have been eating a mixture of raw and cooked vegetarian food for 2 years now. I make no claims to be an ‘expert’ or author of bestselling books - but my own experiences have shown me I can heal my body and improve my health by making responsible choices. What we choose to put into our bodies, coupled with what we allow to flow through us emotionally - really creates our state of wellness. (more…)

A Mother’s Day Interview with Kristen Suzanne

Sunday, May 9th, 2010 by Tera

This morning I was delighted to start my day by having a cozy call with Kristen of Kristen’s Raw and the new Green Mommy Blog.

I was so impressed with Kristen’s attention to detail when it comes to health, nutrition and making sure she’s getting everything she and her growing baby need. You’ll be very inspired by this call and it’s just a wonderful opportunity to get up close and personal with a woman doing so much to share and inspire the lives of others in the health food community.

On this call, we chatted about:

  • What Kristen ate during the different phases of her pregnancy and why.
  • What Kristen plans to feed her little muffin.
  • Her incredibly journey of getting here.
  • Kristen’s birth plan (I actually got choked up and started to cry! It is loaded with charming details even in the worst-case scenario plans.)
  • How Kristen feels about 100% raw vegan diet for her and her family’s needs.
  • Kristen’s upcoming book (she’s NEVER talked about it before this call, and it’s EXACTLY what the raw community needs!)

and much, much more!

You can access the entire interview here. Enjoy! It was a delight and an honor to connect with Kristen at this very special time in your life and I really hope you enjoy this call. Many of you sent in well wishes for her first Mother’s Day and that made the call really special, too, so thank you for reaching out with your support!

I’d Like to Know...
Listening to how careful Kristen is with her calories, supplements and protein, etc., how do you feel about your health and the degree to which you inform yourself about your nutritional needs? Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Say “When”

Friday, April 9th, 2010 by admin

by Lisa Marie Lindenschmidt

My gramma stood at the stove, my plate in one hand, a huge spoonful of mashed potatoes in the other. “Say when,” she told me. After the first spoonful – which was roughly about a cup of mashed potatoes – I said, “When.” She said, “Hungh?” and feigned deafness… and continued shoveling the potatoes on my plate.

She loved me. This was her way of letting me know that she always had plenty to give me, that there would always be enough for me. The only way to get her to stop shoveling was to practically pry the plate out of her fingers and squeal, “OK! OK!” She always wanted you to feel like you were welcome and loved. Piling your plate high with delicious foods was just one of her ways of showing that.

The only problem with this was… that I knew the mantras. I knew that about halfway through I would start to feel full. And I knew what I would hear if I didn’t finish my plate: “No dessert unless you clean that plate. I don’t want you wasting all that food now.” When you’re a kid, it’s all about the dessert. So, I’d look down at my plate despondently and try to finish the food. The other thing that was at play here was that if we didn’t finish our food, my gramma would take it as a personal affront, as some indication that her cooking wasn’t good enough, that she wasn’t good enough. This was tough for 9-year-old to unpack.

As I got older, I learned ways of speaking to my gramma that were compassionate, but assertive: “Hey, why don’t you get the baby’s plate ready and I’ll shovel my own potatoes, OK?” or “I just want a taste of that dressing. I’m saving all my extra space for some of your amazing desserts!” I got clever. I thought I’d handled it. Because this was just about appeasing my gramma… right?

Of course not. It never is. I got so used to hearing these mantras that I started using them myself:

  • Always clean your plate.
  • Don’t waste food.
  • No dessert until you’re done with the meal.
  • When visiting others, always eat what you’re given so as not to insult the host.

I got really good at subconsciously repeating them back and, I later realized, ingraining them at the deepest levels of who I am. Years later I would have friends over and would spend hours in the kitchen preparing beautiful meals. As everyone was sitting around the table, I would plate the food, always honouring people’s “when,” convinced I’d learned a valuable lesson. But at every meal, I began noticing something niggling in the back of my head. I heard little voices saying, “They didn’t really take much. Do they not like my food?… There’s a lot left over on his plate. Maybe I’m not really as good a cook as I thought…” Oh, NO! I’d turned into my gramma!

What would happen if I decided something radical? What if I began making meals for the sole purpose of enjoying making the meal? What if I turned my meals into an offering instead of a mandate? What if I invested in leftover containers? What if – and this one’s huge – I didn’t offer a dessert?!

Reclaiming my intentions around food preparation and food consumption has taken me years. I still get little twinges when someone says, “You know, I don’t really care for that” when someone tries one of my dishes. Now I either chalk it up to bad taste (just kidding) or talk to them about how they would improve it. It’s less now about ego and more about communication.

Because that’s really all these meals are… expressions of self searching for connexion.

Jessica Fenton’s Top Ten Tips for Raw Moms

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010 by admin

Jessica came highly referred to Raw mom by one of our readers who enjoyed the Raw Mom Summit, and I love hearing about inspiring raw moms out there and know you do too!

Jessica Fenton’s Top Ten Tips for Raw Moms

  • jess_michael_7_years_raw_2008Eat with your child at every opportunity
    • Children are sociable creatures and love to interact as they eat. Eating as a family is crucial to your child’s development as it teaches him to try new foods and gives him the confidence at meal times to explore new foods. Often if he sees you enjoying a food, he will too.
  • Introduce new foods slowly
    • If your child doesn’t seem to like a new food don’t panic just try him again with it at later date.
  • Make food fun
    • Make a game out of meal times and trying new foods. If your child seems unsure at first let him see how much you love it. Make fun faces out of his food on his plate and rename the meal with a silly name to entice him.
  • Don’t make issues out of meal times

If your child is not willing to partake in a meal time let him get down from the table to avoid getting locked into a battle over the dinner table. Just make it clear that this is his main meal and there may be no more snaking until later.

  • If your child wants to eat cooked food – let him
    • This is especially important if your child has previously eaten a cooked diet. Just make sure that it’s home cooked with love and consists of the healthiest cooked foods possible. Avoid the common nasties such as refined sugar, refined salt, wheat, gluten, dairy, meat, etc. Don’t deny him the foods he craves or else he might resort to eating them in secret, which no child should ever have to resort to.
  • Let your child help with creating his meals if he is old enough

Real N’Raw David Wolfe Hits Melbourne!

Friday, March 5th, 2010 by admin

Wow – last weekend was fabulous for raw foodists here in Melbournetown.

On the hot, hot, hot Saturday afternoon, the Melbourne Raw Food Meet-up Group got together to feast on scrumptious raw creations, and to view the recently released Real N’ Raw movie. Have you heard about this movie?

r-r_pack-1It follows the story of Matthew Wilson, a young man who cured himself of serious illness, and it features interviews with inspirational people who’ve healed themselves, and many raw-food leaders and health professionals, including Don Tolman, David Wolfe, Dr Laura Lyons, Mike Adams, Rainbeau Mars, Viktoras Kulvinskas, Matt Amsden, Victoria and Sergei Boutenko, Janette MurrayWakelin and many others.

I love that wise quotes are peppered throughout the film, including this gem:

“It is easier to change a man’s religion than it is to change his diet.”

Hmmm, how very true.

It really is a compelling film, and I love that half (that’s right, half!) of the sales of the DVD are being donated to Fruit for Our Children Charitable Trust, which is committed to growing fruit trees in New Zealand, for future generations to benefit from. If you’d like to know more about the trust, head to http://fruitforourchildren.com/.

The film is available now on DVD, at http://realnraw.co.nz/, and it features a bonus soundtrack of 17 reggae songs. Groovy, mon!

david-wolfeThe other highlight of our weekend was a visit from David Wolfe, as part of his whirlwind Australian tour. A packed auditorium (and boy, do I mean packed – like, people sitting on the steps) hosted the event, and we were entertained and informed for well over three hours.

With medical practitioners as parents, it’s any wonder David ventured into the health field. It’s obvious his knowledge is incredible (and having a masters degree in nutrition and a background in science and mechanical engineering proves he’s one smart raw cookie) – but three hours was barely enough time to scratch the surface of his amazing databank.

He showed us photos of unusual superfood plants, and played videos of beautiful fresh-water springs from around the world (just hearing the sound of the water gushing was exhilarating!). He’s even convinced me to go barefoot more often, and to find out about a little electronic device that he wears on plane to help keep him grounded. However, although he did put forward a compelling argument for including raw chocolate regularly in our diets, I’m still sceptical that it’s the best superfood, given its high caffeine content – a view that’s backed up by Dr Jameth Sheridan in an interview I listened to recently on the Raw Food World Radio Show (that show is still available for free download at http://riverbender.com/rawspirit/, until the end of March). But I still feel good about including it occasionally in my children’s diet.

The event was beautifully orchestrated, with David’s books available for sale, including The Sunfood Diet Success System, Naked Chocolate: The Astonishing Truth About the World’s Greatest Food, Eating For Beauty, and Superfoods: The Food and Medicine of the Future. There were also raw food vendors serving up luscious cheezecakes and green smoothies, and plenty of superfoods were also available for purchase. Raw heaven.

David then spent the evening entertaining and dining with raw peeps at Le Cru, Melbourne’s only raw-food restaurant. I couldn’t go, but I heard it was a hoot!

If you’re interested in David’s teachings, I’d advise checking out his books and visiting his subscription website – www.thebestdayever.com – where you’ll find years’ worth of archived interviews, articles and audio downloads.

It’s wonderful to have a full weekend immersed in gaining knowledge, and being with a community that inspires and supports each other. I get the feeling that we’re going to have to organise more of these events, as more and more people awaken and come to realise that their health really is in their own hands.

Have a wonderful week, everybody, and hug your babies.

Love Jo
